Therefore, sitting or standing with a straight back is a good way to reduce pressure on the lungs and may help with chest tightness.
  2. Take deeper breaths — Shallow breaths fail to stretch your lungs and chest, and this may result in feelings of tightness or even pain. To stretch your lungs more, work on gradually increasing the time it takes you to inhale and exhale. For instance, you can take 5 breaths where you inhale for 5 seconds and exhale for 5 seconds. Then, you can try to move up to 6, 7 or 8 seconds of inhaling and exhaling.
  3. Slow down your breathing — As mentioned earlier, hyperventilation is one cause of chest tightness. There are many breathing techniques you can use to slow your breathing and fight back against hyperventilation and chest tightness. For instance, pursed-lip breathing is one technique that may help.
  4. Change your diet — Eating lung-healthy fruits, vegetables and sources of healthy fats can help reduce the bloating associated with processed and fried foods. This type of diet is helpful for your lungs because it may help relieve chest tightness and other chronic lung disease symptoms.
  5. Know when to seek more help — Although your doctor may already be aware that you’re dealing with this symptom, it’s important to let them know if your chest tightness worsens or doesn’t react to treatment. This way they can help you find additional tips and treatment options that may work better for you.
